    Understanding the New NJ Law

In January 2024, Governor Murphy signed P.L. 2023, c. 237 into law, amending the Contractors' Registration Act and creating the Home Improvement and Home Elevation Contractor Licensing Act.

This law requires all New Jersey home improvement and home elevation contractors to obtain a compliance surety bond as a condition of their registration with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.

The bond protects New Jersey consumers by ensuring contractors fulfill their contractual obligations. If a contractor fails to complete work or violates the law, consumers can file a claim against the bond.
